Once a year I try to hold a foxhunt that could be considered a
little more challenging then basic beginner meets. Often,
this means the unusual and outside the standard ARDF format.
The plan is to have 2 meter transmitters, one
difficult and
the
others easier but still challenging. Participants are encouraged
to bring their own "foxes" and allow time for them to be hidden.
This way all have a chance to
participate. Let me know their frequency so we can plan
spectrum use ahead of
time. One 80 meter transmitter will also be placed.
Date |
Saturday, August 28, 2010 |
Starting time/location |
11:30 AM at picnic table to the
left or behind store, see map.
All must start from this location. Plenty of parking at the boat lanch
area or in front of store. After hunt,
return for socializing, etc. |
Transmitter(s)(foxes) |
Five 2 meter FM
transmitters. One 80 meter CW transmitter |
Type of hunt |
On foot but OK to use vehicle
to traverse distances. OK to pair up if you choose too.
This area is a combination forest, beach and open areas with much
historic military value |
Search Boundary |
Within Ft. Flagler State Park, public unrestricted areas |
Have I found it? |
ARDF flags will not be used but a
small (2 in) lapel button with a codeword will be within 3 feet of
antenna. This will test your "close in sniffing"
skills. All you'll need to record is this codeword. Please
leave site as quickly as possible to reduce help to others and
vandals. For Tx #3, the IDer will give
further instructions. Tx #6,8 will have wooden animal icon in which a unique 'Q' signal will be attached. Record this for "proof of find" . Please do not attempt to locate the transmitter itself as they usually will be well hidden, ..... your looking for the antenna marker. |
Special Needs: |
For those going for Tx #3: Bring a GPS or magnetic compass and know how to use them to find the "prize" |
Liason and emergency frequency |
145.15 Mhz, "-" offset, PL=114.8 |
Accessibility |
On foot with possible small
deadfall
or two to
cross. Bushwhacking would not exceed 20
meters from
nearest trail |
Hazards |
A few nettles and sea coast
cliffs. Wildlife is friendly |
Degree of difficulty |
Mostly intermediate |
After hunt |
Bring
your
own
food. Seasonal store has free WiFi and picnic items.
I'll be working alone with no
one planned to remain in the "start "area once hunt is underway so lock
everything in your vehicle. The plan is to return to "start"
after
3 hours maximum for socializing, comparing notes, etc. |
